Screwed
The Faculty of Grad Studies wrote me a letter turning down my application and insinuating that I was not up to snuff. I called and asked for clarification of the reasons. The answerer said that I would have to find that out from the dept. I said the dept recommended me for acceptance. She said then it's usually because of low GPA. I said my GPA is over 4.0. She tranferred my call.
The next answerer looked up my file and said that the University does not recognize my degrees. She said that the dept could appeal it but decided not to. She said I could appeal.
I then talked to the person who is in charge of the program that my studenship was supposed to be through. He let it be known that he did not agree with the decision (using the word "lousy" and saying this was not the university's finest hour), that the dept had appealed and that the dean of graduate studies just decided not to go further with it. He said he hadn't known up til now that the university had issues with degrees from religious institutions. In the meantime, my studentship has to go to someone else.
I am alternating between sad, angry and numb. I put a message into the Human Rights Commission as I'm wondering if I can fight this as religious discrimination.

They wouldn't accept you because you went to a religious university?
That's crazy!
HMMMMMM! Lazy dean.
Off with his head. However, one must ponder wether or not the door was closed by a larger hand and why.
Mel - it's not in writing, but yes, that seems to be the basic reason grads of places like Booth College and Providence College have trouble with the U of M.
i'm wondering why the colleges don't try to get accredited if their students are interested in furthering their education in a secular university.
Here's a quote for you on that one. It's from Booth's website:
"There are no national or regional accreditation bodies in Canada equivalent to those in the United States. Universities and colleges in Canada are chartered by the provinces and are free to establish policies regarding the recognition of each other’s courses and degree programs. The Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) was established to facilitate, among other things, the mutual recognition of degrees and courses. Membership is currently limited to institutions with more than 500 students (FTE). Booth College does not currently qualify for membership although it meets the academic standards of member institutions."
Both Booth and Providence have accreditation through bodies that do not impose restrictions on size but look at academic quality.
And both are recognized by the province.
Maybe you are the catalyst to see that this good change happens!! Fight on!!! Oh mighty warrior, fight on!!!
The buggers. I remember that being an issue way back when I was thinking about degrees. CMBC and Concord were recognized, though I don't think either would make the size requirement. Any idea why the unequal treatment?? (I have no idea what happens now that those places have become CMU)
I think you should appeal if you can. It's just not right!
Judi I believe eventually people of principle will find honor. I've seen it in the strangest place. People don't want principled people until THEIR OWN rights get violated but the UNpricipled .... then a person with good values becomes the hero.
JJ: I'm not sure of why the unequal treatment. I did hear that CMU had come to some sort of arrangement, which could lend credibility to my own appeal.
Bev: I hope you're right.
Mel: I will appeal.
