More about alcohol in pregnancy

I've started reading a book on FASD a couple of days ago called Damaged Angels. The author, Bonnie Buxton, has a wonderful way of mixing experience and story with research and information.

Interestingly enough, this adds to the discussion below. She lists some research done that shows there may be evidence that the unborn are influenced negatively by even small amounts of alcohol, at about the level the Danish guy said is probably okay. While the damage would not be called FASD, some intelligence and behaviour differences were noted between children whose mothers abstained and children whose mothers drank a little. More food for thought. Yes, if you drink small amounts your child may not get FASD, but she might not be all she could have been (very much what Cindy was questioning).

Thanks for hearing me out...

There's also anecdotal evidence that children can be similarly affected by being exposed to alcohol in breast milk even though their mothers abstained during pregnancy. The brain and central nervous system are still developing quite a bit during the first year or so after birth.

The first few years are a very critical time for brain development. Literally billions of connections have yet to be formed when a child is born.
