Parallels

As I'm exploring homeschooling in the mode of unschooling or lifeschooling (my favourite term thus far) I'm noticing parallels between ideas in that and the emerging church.

Both of them question the current structures and whether or not they are functioning to accomplish what they want to do. Both the institutional church and education instututions have become dominant models, but don't experience the success that they hope for. The response thus far has largely been to tamper with the prevailing models rather than look at new models. New models are typically met with suspicion and even anger.

Both the institutional church and eudcational instiutions have largely removed learning from practice, preferring teachers/preachers and books over experiencial forms, yet we know from research and experience that what we do is a more powerful way of learning than just hearing or seeing. In both the emerging church and lifeschooling the emphasis is on living, not sitting and listening.

Hey Jude. I'm glad you guys are finding your niche. I agree we learn much better when our lessons are cemented through practical hands on experience. At the same time, I'm *so* not an unschooler. I just take what we are learning and try to make it as real and practical, and interesting as possible. Seems to be working for us! I recently read something I think you would enjoy, it made me LOL at points. It's not about education, but it's cute;

That was a great article. I especially agree about drinking to handle the children better ;) Seriously, I think I'm starting to see the wisdom of "leave them alone". Kids really do want to learn and want to fit into the adult world. They will learn if they have an environment to support it.
